ABERDEEN, S.D. - 91��Ƭ�� State University’s "Experience 91��Ƭ��" video campaign earned a Gold ADDY Award from the American Advertising Federation-South Dakota for video editing in the Elements of Advertising category. The award was presented at the SD Advertising Federation Award Show.

The award recognized the "Experience 91��Ƭ�� Video Spots," a project produced by 91��Ƭ�� State University in partnership with Epicosity, a full-service marketing agency. The campaign was part of the larger "Experience 91��Ƭ��" brand effort and highlighted creative video editing and visual storytelling.

"Being recognized for the edit technique in the project is not only rewarding but affirming! The entire production was approached with the idea of locked-on motion, cut-points to the music, and warmer tones in the color grade. There are a lot of layers to this, and our editor rocked it! The spirit of the Experience 91��Ƭ�� campaign inherently commanded a visual showcase. To produce that for NSU and for it to be received so positively locally and competitively is fulfilling!" said Travis Berg, executive director of Epicosity.

Berg also emphasized the collaboration behind the project.

"Making a project special, like this one, doesn't just happen in an edit bay. It takes tremendous collaboration to make a concept resonate. We couldn't have done it without Chad and the NSU team! We are very appreciative to have their trust in the 91��Ƭ�� brand!" Berg said.

The American Advertising Awards, commonly known as the ADDYs, are a three-tier competition hosted by the American Advertising Federation to recognize creative excellence in advertising. Entries compete at the local, district and national levels. A Gold ADDY is the highest honor at the local level and automatically advances to the next tier of competition.

Audiences are constantly consuming content across platforms, so this Gold ADDY recognition affirms what’s possible when strong creative partnerships, strategic storytelling and bold ideas come together. ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony invites the community to the middle concert of its 2025-26 season at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater at 91��Ƭ�� State University. A pre-concert conversation is also scheduled from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Berggren Recital Hall.

Christopher Stanichar, director of the Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony, will lead the orchestra. The concert, titled Level Up: An Epic Video Games Pops Concert, will transport the audience into the worlds of Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, World of Witchcraft and more.

Video game music has become a cultural phenomenon, captivating generations with epic themes and unforgettable melodies. By bringing this repertoire to the concert hall, the orchestra honors its artistry while inviting new audiences into the symphonic tradition.

The concert will also feature performances by student winners of this year’s 91��Ƭ�� State University Concerto/Aria Competition: Ember Geist, soprano, and Axton Johnson, trumpet.

Geist will sing Luigi Arditi’s “Il Bacio.” She is a junior at 91��Ƭ�� State University majoring in music education with a minor in musical theatre. She has been involved in musical theatre productions including The Sound of Music, where she played Sister Berthe. She is also involved in ensembles including Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and Early Music Ensemble. Geist studies with Dr. Darci Bultema, professor of voice at 91��Ƭ�� State University.

Johnson is a sophomore at 91��Ƭ�� State University majoring in music education. He performs in major instrumental ensembles, including the Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony, Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble. He also serves as a NAfME mentor, AUCS student representative and fine arts senator for 91��Ƭ�� State University’s Student Government Association. Johnson studies with Dr. Grant Manhart, professor of trumpet at 91��Ƭ�� State University.

The concert will also feature the winner of the orchestra’s inaugural Battle for the Baton fundraising competition, where either Dan Cleberg or Travis Schaunaman will step to the podium and conduct a selection during the concert.

Celebrating its 106th season, the Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony is the oldest continuous orchestra in South Dakota, attracting musicians from Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa and the surrounding area. Stanichar, assistant professor of music at 91��Ƭ�� State University, is the orchestra’s 17th conductor.

All Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony tickets are general admission and will be available at the door. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and 91��Ƭ�� State University faculty and staff. All students will be admitted free. ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Aberdeen Development Corporation (ADC) and the 91��Ƭ�� Innovation & Startup Center are excited to announce the opening of applications for the 2026 Aberdeen Business Pitch Competition. Entrepreneurs and startup businesses from across the region are invited to compete for a $10,000 cash prize while advancing their entrepreneurial ambitions.

Applications will be accepted March 1, 2026 through April 30, 2026. Finalists will be announced by June 1, 2026, with the final competition event scheduled for June 19, 2026.

“The Aberdeen Business Pitch Competition represents our ongoing commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in our community,” said Tim Hanigan, CEO of the Aberdeen Development Corporation. “This exciting event provides a tangible platform for aspiring business owners to refine their ideas, connect with potential investors, and take meaningful steps toward success.”

The competition welcomes startups and prospective businesses that are less than 5 years in operation with less than $500,000 in cumulative revenue as of the application deadline. Previous participants are welcome to apply again — those who entered in past years may submit the same business (if not previously selected as finalists) or a different business concept.

The competition is designed to inspire and support a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, assist prospective and startup businesses in fine-tuning ideas and plans to secure investment and financing, and advance businesses from concept to launch toward success and profitability.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – 91��Ƭ�� State University will welcome No. 1 New York Times-bestselling author, award-winning educator, founder and philanthropist Sharon McMahon as the keynote speaker for the Larry and Julie Poeppel Family Common Read Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2026, in the Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Sharon McMahon is a longtime government and law teacher who provides daily insights on current events, political misinformation, the history and function of the U.S. government, and ways to support democracy.

“I’m excited that The Small and the Mighty has been selected as 91��Ƭ�� State University’s next Common Read. Showcasing the everyday Americans whose actions shaped the course of our nation’s history, the book encourages reflection on perseverance, empathy, and the shared responsibility to do the next needed thing—something we all need to be reminded of, especially right now,” said Sharon McMahon.

She is the author of the No. 1 New York Times bestselling book The Small and the Mighty: Twelve Unsung Americans Who Changed the Course of History, which highlights inspiring stories of ordinary people whose courage and action forged meaningful change. McMahon also hosts the award-winning podcast Here’s Where It Gets Interesting, where she brings history and civics to life with compelling narratives and interviews.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – High school innovators from South Dakota and across the country were recognized through the 2025 BIG Idea Competition, with winners announced during an awards ceremony held Dec. 18 at 91��Ƭ�� State University.

The competition was split into two finalist tracks. Out-of-state finalists presented on Dec. 9, while South Dakota finalists presented Dec. 18. In total, nearly $55,000 in cash and scholarships was awarded.

South Dakota winners

1st place: Dakota Detailing – Dean Castellano and Bennett Woolverton (Warner High School; advisor Pam Lane). $1,000 cash and $2,500 scholarships to 91��Ƭ�� State University, Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota.
2nd place: Bloom – Brynn Kindelspire (Tri-Valley High School; advisor Tracy Vogt). $500 cash and $2,000scholarships to 91��Ƭ�� State University, Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – 91��Ƭ�� State University and the Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony Advisory Board are launching the Battle for the Baton, a friendly fundraising competition where community donations count as votes and help determine who will take the podium as guest conductor during the Symphony’s 7:30 p.m. concert on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, in the Jewett Theater inside 91��Ƭ�� State University’s Johnson Fine Arts Center.

This year’s contestants are Aberdeen Mayor Travis Schaunaman and community champion Dan Cleberg. Supporters can make a donation to vote for their preferred contestant, and the winner will conduct a musical selection during the Feb. 28 concert. Proceeds support ongoing performances and activities of the Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, in the Jewett Theater inside 91��Ƭ�� State University’s Johnson Fine Arts Center. Tickets are general admission and available at the door only. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and 91��Ƭ�� State University faculty and staff; students are admitted free.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – 91��Ƭ�� State University will celebrate the accomplishments of its graduates at Winter Commencement, set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center.

The ceremony is open to the public, and no tickets are required. Doors will open at least one hour before the event. The ceremony is expected to last about 90 minutes. Guests are encouraged to stay through the end to honor all graduates.

For those unable to attend in person, the event will be streamed live via multiple platforms. The ceremony will be livestreamed through the NSU Facebook page, and broadcast locally on Midco channel 12 and NVC Channel 12. The broadcast will also be available channel 588 on Midco.

Live captioning will be provided on screen at the venue, as well as online through Facebook and the graduation webpage.

Winter Commencement marks a significant milestone for students as they celebrate their achievements and take the next step in their journeys.

91��Ƭ�� State University Winter Choral Concert set for Dec. 4

ABERDEEN, S.D. – 91��Ƭ�� State University will present its annual Winter Choral Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Kline St.

The performance will feature the 91��Ƭ�� State University Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and Early Musick Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Timothy Woods.

The concert will open with the Concert Choir performing a South African piece that incorporates light choreography. The choir’s set will conclude with works from Mongolia and Scandinavia.

The Chamber Singers will follow with two of the “North Country Folk Songs” and a major work by composer Eric Whitacre.

The Early Musick Ensemble will present four pieces from the late 16th century, leading into the seasonal portion of the program. That portion will begin with two works the Chamber Singers will also perform at this year’s Christmas on the Prairie concert: Christ the Appletree by Scriven and O Magnum Mysterium by Hawley.

The Concert Choir will close the evening with a John Rutter piece celebrating food, the other setting of In the Bleak Midwinter, and Jeff Haskell’s arrangement of O Holy Night, featuring the seniors in the choir as soloists.

The event is free and open to the public, though donations will be accepted for the music scholarship fund.

FAIL Fest Celebrates Lessons Learned as Local Entrepreneurs Share Their Missteps

ABERDEEN, S.D. — Most events celebrate big wins. FAIL Fest celebrates the moments we tripped, wiped out or completely missed the mark—and learned something brilliant because of it.

Back for another year of laughter, honesty and moments that didn’t go as planned, this year’s FAIL Fest featured a panel of entrepreneurs who weren’t afraid to dig into the tough questions.

Julie Fischbach, owner of the Finery Marketplace and Finery on Main Event Venue, spent years finding her path, from corporate work to business owner and small business coach, each twist has taught her something.

“I bounce back quickly because you have to. You’ve got to bound back really, really quickly,” she said. “I look at it as a learning experience. Honestly, there’s really no such thing as failure because you wouldn’t have known if you wouldn’t have tried it. And you need to try it. You need to take that risk so you know if it’s going to be a reward or a lesson.”

Joining Fischbach on the panel, Taylor Sumption discussed how things like the price of oats in Canada caused him to pivot into new experiences.

Sumption, chief executive officer of Maple Valley Foods and co-founder of Anthem Oats, advised those in the crowd to really look into who they do business with.

“There's nothing more unstoppable than a group of people working well together and pulling in the same direction,” he said.

“And there is literally nothing more destructive to your mental health, physical health, everything than a group of people not working well together.”

Sumption pointed to issue he and his wife faced while building up Anthem Oats. The company grew quickly, but the working environment wasn’t positive for the couple. They changed that path, cutting down on the number of stores they distributed to causing sales to drop by 70 or 80 percent. But it allowed them to love the work again.

“There's just a lesson in everything,” he said. “There's one thing, or a couple of things I could point to that are failures in my life like letting little problems fester. They need to be addressed. They can grow into really big problems quickly. …Something I learned over the years is letting those little things take away can really, really hurt you.”

Ryan Rivett, president and chief executive officer of My Place Hotels of America, echoed that point, saying there have been situations where he has let failure characterize how he responded to other things. That, he said, is a bigger failure.

“I can’t say we've had a lot of big failures and I'm thankful for that, but I also can say that we have a lot of small failures every day,” he said. “One of the biggest failures that I've had personally along the way is letting small failures lash themselves onto what I do tomorrow.

“Look at a failure not as something that is momentous or important, but something that is a stepping stone along the way,” he said. “Use these opportunities to understand what you want to do or how you want to go about it.”

FAIL Fest has become an annual event to remind us to celebrate progress, perseverance and the power of trying again, said Bea Smith, director of the 91��Ƭ�� Innovation and Startup Center.

“When we talk openly about the ideas that didn’t go as planned, we create space for the breakthroughs that can,” she said. “You never know what success might be hiding inside a misstep.

“If we rallied around our failures instead of beating ourselves up over them, imagine how much faster we could build momentum. That’s what this event is all about—owning our stumbles, learning from them and using them as fuel to move forward.”
