ABERDEEN, S.D. – 91��Ƭ�� State University announces the new Jim and Boni Lochner Scholarship, an opportunity designed to support educators pursuing the Graduate Certificate in Visual Impairments and help meet workforce needs across South Dakota. The scholarship provides $5,000 per year, renewable for up to two years, to six students.

The scholarship supports educators completing 91��Ƭ�� State University’s Graduate Certificate in Visual Impairments, which is designed to meet the requirements for the South Dakota Department of Education endorsement in Blind and Visually Impaired.

“We are thankful to the Lochners for providing this generous scholarship for educators interested in becoming highly qualified to teach students who are blind or visually impaired,” said Interim Provost Dr. Erin Fouberg. “With this scholarship and the graduate certificate in visual impairments, 91��Ƭ�� is helping address the severe shortage of teachers in South Dakota and across the nation.”

Ideal candidates include teachers currently working in general education or special education who seek to expand their professional impact. The program welcomes educators from all grade levels and content areas.

The Graduate Certificate in Visual Impairments may be completed as a stand-alone credential or serve as a pathway into 91��Ƭ�� State University’s MSEd in Special Education with a specialization in visual impairments.

Award amount: $5,000 per year, renewable for up to two years (up to $10,000 total)

ABERDEEN, S.D. – 91��Ƭ�� State University has joined the South Dakota IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (SD INBRE), a statewide research consortium funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

New this academic year (2025–26), 91��Ƭ�� is serving as a partner institution in the program, which supports undergraduate research and strengthens biomedical and behavioral science education across South Dakota.

As part of this partnership, three 91��Ƭ�� students are conducting funded research projects alongside two faculty mentors:

Owen Douglas, working with Dr. Samantha St. Clair, assistant professor of biology
Mary Fites, working with Dr. Samantha St. Clair, assistant professor of biology
Chloe Voss, working with Dr. Chelsee Shortt, chair and assistant professor of exercise science and physical education

In addition, Dr. Jessica Talmage, assistant professor of human performance and exercise science, received a separate $10,000 SD INBRE grant to support equipment purchases for her research and 91��Ƭ��’s laboratory facilities.

“We are very excited about 91��Ƭ�� joining SD INBRE! This will allow NSU to invest even more in our strategic priority of providing experiential learning opportunities for our students,” said Mike Wanous, provost and vice president for academic affairs.

That promise continues today through the Millicent Atkins 1901 Scholarship Program, which was redesigned in Fall 2024 and will introduce a new tiered model beginning in Fall 2026.

Rooted in 91��Ƭ��'s proud tradition of preparing teachers, this scholarship honors future educators by providing all Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education majors with at least $1,901 per year, while rewarding academic excellence with enhanced awards.

"Elementary and early childhood teachers have the incredible responsibility of starting every child's story in education," said Dr. Anna Schwan, dean of the Millicent Atkins School of Education. "The Millicent Atkins 1901 Scholarship celebrates those who choose this meaningful work. Scholarship Tiers

Beginning Fall 2026, the Millicent Atkins 1901 Scholarship will follow a tiered model available to all current, new, and transfer students majoring in Elementary Education (B.S.Ed.) or Early Childhood Education (A.S.):

Millicent Atkins 1901 Untold – GPA 3.75+ and ACT 24+ Award: $2,750 per semester ($5,500 per year) — Total: $22,000
Millicent Atkins 1901 Legacy – GPA 3.25+ and ACT 18+ Award: $2,250 per semester ($4,500 per year) — Total: $18,000
Millicent Atkins 1901 Promise – GPA 2.75+ with no ACT requirement Award: $1,750 per semester ($3,500 per year) — Total: $14,000
Millicent Atkins 1901 – All admitted Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education majors Award: $902.50 per semester ($1,901 per year) — Total: $7,604

It is renewable for up to eight consecutive fall and spring semesters toward a first bachelor's degree. To remain eligible, students must be full-time, make progress toward their program each semester, and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA at the end of each academic year.

Automatic Award for Qualified Students

No separate scholarship application is required. High school seniors, transfer students, and current 91��Ƭ�� students who are admitted to Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education programs will automatically receive the scholarship tier for which they qualify beginning Fall 2026.

Named in honor of Millicent Atkins, one of 91��Ƭ��'s most generous benefactors and a lifelong educator, the scholarship program reflects her enduring legacy of empowering teachers and strengthening education in South Dakota. ABERDEEN, S.D. — 91��Ƭ�� State University's fall 2025 enrollment resulted in pockets of growth and areas of stability despite a decrease in first-year students. Total headcount increased from 3,708 to 3,739, and undergraduate transfer students were up 33%, the highest among the regental schools. Additionally, 69% of freshman students were retained from last fall to this fall, resulting in a 4% increase in continuing undergraduate headcount. Full-time equivalent enrollment and student credit hours were steady compared with fall 2024.

Two-thirds of 91��Ƭ��'s incoming freshman class are South Dakota students, and one-third are from Brown County.

"These statistics demonstrate that 91��Ƭ�� is fulfilling its mission in providing access to higher education within the region while also meeting regional workforce demands," said Eric Kline, enrollment management officer. "Though we did not meet our freshman class recruitment goal, the overall enrollment picture was positive, showing some stability. Today's young adults have multiple options for educational pathways, and we are proud to serve the community and region in providing a safe, welcoming, affordable and quality education for those who become part of the Wolfpack."

In addition to providing undergraduate and graduate programs, 91��Ƭ�� offers a unique mission in educating high school students across the state through its dual enrollment, Rising Scholars, 91��Ƭ�� Academy and E-Learning programs. With a 5% increase in high school dual enrollment, high school students receive college credit in select courses as juniors or seniors.

The 91��Ƭ�� State University Center for Statewide E-Learning enhances educational experiences for schools and students across South Dakota by offering high school courses that address critical unmet local needs. "E-Learning expands course offerings statewide, making quality education available to all South Dakota students," said Mary Cundy, E-Learning principal. This year they expect to teach approximately 3,000 high school students through the E-Learning Center.

91��Ƭ�� continues to expand opportunities for postsecondary education through its certificate, two-year, four-year and master's programs, which include flexible delivery options. As part of its ongoing commitment to serving the region, 91��Ƭ�� welcomed its first cohort of nursing students this fall in the new Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and will open a state-of-the-art Business, Health and Innovation Center in spring 2026.

ABERDEEN, S.D. — 91��Ƭ�� State University's Millicent Atkins School of Education will celebrate the completion of major renovations to the historic H.P. Gerber Building with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house Friday, Sept. 19.

The celebration will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony from 4 to 4:15 p.m., followed by an open house from 4:15 to 5 p.m. Both events will take place at the H.P. Gerber Building on the 91��Ƭ�� State University campus.

The H.P. Gerber Building holds special significance as one of the oldest buildings on campus and the birthplace of 91��Ƭ�� State University, which began as a teacher education college. The extensive renovation project, which began in spring 2024, has transformed the building's facilities from traditional teacher-centered classrooms to dynamic learning environments designed to prepare 21st century leaders in education.

"We want Gerber to be alive. We want it to be the place where students, faculty and staff learn, collaborate, research, study or even just be. I want our building to match the vibrancy of the teaching and learning happening within its walls," said Dr. Anna Schwan, dean of the Millicent Atkins School of Education.

The renovated spaces feature enhanced learning environments that incorporate innovative technology and collaborative areas, moving away from the traditional classroom model to support student-centric instruction. These improvements will directly benefit the hundreds of students and faculty across the School of Education's three departments: Teacher Education, Sports Sciences and Psychology and Counselor Education.

"We're excited to unveil these improvements and show our community the enhanced facilities that will benefit our students and programs," Schwan said. "The renovations have reconfigured much of the existing space to provide environments conducive to preparing the next generation of professionals and leaders in education, mental health, and physical health."

During the open house, visitors will have the opportunity to tour the renovated spaces, meet faculty and staff and learn about the innovative programs housed in the H.P. Gerber Building. Attendees will see firsthand how the modernized facilities support authentic, hands-on learning experiences that prepare students to excel in their chosen fields. The event is open to the public.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – 91��Ƭ�� State University will offer a new Bachelor of Science in Education (BSEd) focused on Career and Technical Education (CTE)—a unique degree in the state’s public university system designed to meet South Dakota’s growing need for qualified CTE teachers.

Approved by the South Dakota Board of Regents at its July 2025 meeting, the program is set to begin in Fall 2025. It comes at a critical time as the state prepares to modernize its career cluster framework for the 2026–27 school year, offering a proactive solution to the long-standing shortage of licensed CTE educators, particularly in rural areas.

“This program is about more than just filling a workforce need, it’s about opening a new door for students who want to teach but haven’t seen themselves in the traditional pathway,” said Dr. Anna Schwan, dean of 91��Ƭ��’s Millicent Atkins School of Education. “The flexibility of the BSEd in CTE means we can meet students where they are, especially those enrolled in our state’s outstanding technical colleges. We have the potential to create a path that helps students turn their skills and passions into meaningful teaching careers all across South Dakota.”

The program is designed to attract a wide range of future educators, including students currently enrolled in technical colleges, experienced professionals seeking to transition into teaching and traditional undergraduates who want to take courses at 91��Ƭ�� and specialize in areas like health sciences, business or technology.

Students will complete education coursework at 91��Ƭ��, including specialized CTE training in curriculum design, authentic assessment, and work-based learning coordination. Flexible delivery options—such as online and HyFlex—will ensure the program is accessible to working adults.

BSEd in CTE is supported by the South Dakota Department of Education’s Division of College, Career, and Student Success, educational partners like Lake Area Technical College, and regional school districts working to spark interest in teaching within CTE fields. ABERDEEN, S.D. — Samantha Wipf was named the winner of the Aberdeen Idea Pitch Competition, hosted by the 91��Ƭ�� Innovation and Startup Center and Aberdeen Development Corporation.

With more than 30 business pitches submitted and five finalists presenting at the competition finals, Wipf's business, Optimal Performance, stood out for its innovative approach to physical therapy. She will receive a $10,000 cash prize, sponsored by the Aberdeen Development Corporation.

"It feels awesome. I'm very appreciative," Wipf said after the announcement. "I feel like I've worked very hard on this pitch. All the others did so well. And it's so fun.

"The prize money is going to give me a great boost to help expand and bring on another therapist and just make care more accessible in Aberdeen and in the rural communities," she said.

Optimal Performance offers one-on-one physical therapy services, specializing in orthopedics, sports and pelvic health. The business features unique manual techniques, such as cupping and dry needling, to accelerate recovery. Additionally, the clinic provides advanced recovery tools, including compression and contrast therapy, with access to an infrared sauna and cold tub.

"We're a little bit different at Optimal Performance. We are a private clinic, which means that we are working for the client and with the client, rather than that secondary insurance system dictating what we can and can't do," Wipf explained. "I get one hour — a lot of times more than one hour — directly with my clients. We can chat more, get a personalized plan of care, and cover multiple issues in one visit — whether it's knee pain, headaches or neck pain."

The other finalists who presented at the pitch competition were surprised when Tim Hanigan, CEO of the Aberdeen Development Corporation, announced that the other four finalists would receive $1,000 to help with their entrepreneurial journey. Those finalists include Robin Niewenhuis with Frodo, Shaun McNeely with Mattress Medic Mobile, Jonah Schmidt with TopDown Drone Services, and Samantha St. Clair and Nicholas Tucker with Sunrise Greens LLC.

"This year's finalist event surpassed any expectation we may have had," said Bea Smith, director of the 91��Ƭ�� Innovation and Startup Center. "It was inspiring to witness five finalists take the stage to pitch their innovative ideas. The community's support for the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Northeast South Dakota was evident, with more than 100 attendees celebrating these visionary entrepreneurs."

Tim Hanigan, CEO of the Aberdeen Development Corporation, echoed the excitement: "It was an awesome experience. The judges faced a tough decision choosing among the finalists, underscoring the high caliber of ideas presented. 91��Ƭ�� State University Rising Scholars Program Earns National Re-Accreditation

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Rising Scholars program at 91��Ƭ�� State University has been granted re-accreditation by the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP), the only national accrediting body for concurrent enrollment programs.

Following an extensive peer-review process, 91��Ƭ��’s program was re-accredited through the 2031–32 academic year. The decision was made by the NACEP Accreditation Commission at its April 29, 2025, meeting. 91��Ƭ�� State remains the only institution in South Dakota with a NACEP-accredited concurrent enrollment program.

91��Ƭ�� first earned accreditation from NACEP in 2017. This year’s re-accreditation required a comprehensive self-study and detailed documentation demonstrating alignment with all 16 of NACEP’s national standards. These standards focus on areas such as faculty qualifications, course content, assessment, student support, and program oversight.

The commission’s official findings commended the Rising Scholars program for its strong faculty engagement and clearly presented materials, especially in the areas of partnerships and mentorship.

“We are honored to receive NACEP re-accreditation status. Complying with the NACEP standards ensures high quality college courses taught at the high school. The program team includes high school teachers and counselors, NSU faculty and staff, and leadership both at the high school and the university. All the partners are deeply committed to the students’ success,” said Terry Piatz, Director of the Rising Scholars program.

The Rising Scholars program provides high school students the opportunity to earn college credit through courses offered in partnership with high schools. Courses are taught by qualified instructors and overseen by 91��Ƭ�� faculty to ensure alignment with university expectations.

91��Ƭ��’s re-accreditation places it among 22 institutions nationwide reaffirmed during the 2024–25 accreditation cycle. In total, 136 programs across 132 institutions in 26 states currently hold NACEP accreditation.

Programs with renewed accreditation commit to maintaining NACEP standards and submitting annual reports. 91��Ƭ��’s next reapplication will occur during the 2030–31 academic year.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – 91��Ƭ�� State University is continuing its full tuition and book scholarship for students pursuing a two-year associate degree in Early Childhood Education. The program is designed to grow South Dakota’s childcare workforce and respond to urgent statewide needs.

Dr. Nicole Schutter, chair of Teacher Education in the Millicent Atkins School of Education, emphasized the broader impact of the associate degree and the scholarship. “Early childhood educators shape a child’s first learning experiences, build curiosity, and foster confidence that lasts a lifetime. By offering scholarships that cover full tuition and books, 91��Ƭ�� shows how deeply we value those who nurture our youngest learners. We’re investing in individuals and in the foundations of our communities.”

91��Ƭ��’s Early Childhood Education associate degree is offered in a flexible format, with options to study in person or online. Paige Henningsen, originally from Ellendale, ND, worked at a childcare center in Aberdeen while enrolled in the program. “Receiving this scholarship made it possible for me to further my education,” she said. “Attending 91��Ƭ�� for Early Childhood Education opened up endless opportunities for me, and I couldn’t be more grateful. It gave me the inspiration and motivation to start my career and open my own daycare.”

91��Ƭ�� State University will offer 10 full tuition and book scholarships to students beginning the associate degree in Early Childhood Education full time in Fall 2025. In return, recipients commit to working for two years after graduation in a licensed childcare center or a state-registered family daycare setting in South Dakota. Students may also choose to continue their education by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Elementary or Special Education.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – For Itzel Brick, becoming a first-grade teacher at Simmons Elementary in Aberdeen, South Dakota, was more than a dream; it was a journey marked by hard work, resilience and opportunities. Many of those opportunities came from the Freedom Scholarship at 91��Ƭ�� State University.

Brick, a 2024 graduate with a bachelor's degree in elementary education, looks back on her time at 91��Ƭ�� with gratitude. “Getting scholarships meant I could spend more time on campus and focus on my classes without constantly worrying about tuition,” she said. “It motivated me to stay on top of my grades because I needed to maintain good academic standing.”

One of her most memorable experiences, made possible by the Freedom Scholarship, was studying abroad in Salamanca, Spain. “It was incredible,” she said. “Experiencing a new culture and education system gave me fresh perspectives I now share with my students.”

The scholarship also opened doors to professional growth. Brick took part in education panels and attended a national conference in Florida for aspiring teachers. “Those opportunities helped shape me into the teacher I am today. They reminded me why I chose this path and showed me I belong in education.”

However, her college journey wasn’t without challenges. In the spring of her sophomore year, Brick became a mother. “Balancing school and motherhood wasn’t easy,” she said. “The Freedom Scholarship gave me room to breathe. It meant I could keep moving forward without choosing between my education and my family.”

While at 91��Ƭ��, Brick stayed active in TRIO and the South Dakota Education Association. She also worked in the registrar’s office for more than three years, gaining experience that would prove invaluable. “Those years were full of lessons, friendships and support. I wouldn’t trade them for anything.”

Now teaching first grade at Simmons Elementary, Brick still relies on the professors who guided her at 91��Ƭ��. “They’re still my go-to for advice,” she said. “On tough days, they’re there to remind me why I do what I do.”

Reflecting on her journey, Brick said, “The Freedom Scholarship wasn’t just financial help. It opened doors I didn’t think I’d walk through. Studying abroad, attending conferences—those experiences shaped who I am today.”

She added, “Scholarships like this change lives. They changed mine.”

About the Freedom Scholarship

The Freedom Scholarship is South Dakota’s first public-private partnership for student scholarships. It provides need-based financial support to students attending participating institutions, including 91��Ƭ�� State University. The scholarship aims to reduce student debt and keep graduates living and working in South Dakota.
