The evening also celebrated the graduation of the 2026 Leadership Aberdeen class, which included four NSU faculty and staff members.</p> <p>The ABBY Awards 鈥 Aberdeen Business Awards 鈥 recognize outstanding businesses, organizations and community leaders for excellence across a range of categories each year. This year's ceremony combined the awards program with the Leadership Aberdeen graduation for a night celebrating leaders, champions and business excellence.</p> <p>VanLaecken, an assistant professor of accounting in 91制片厂 State University's School of Business, was selected for the Top 4 Under 40 program, which honors young leaders between the ages of 25 and 39 who are making a positive impact in Aberdeen and Brown County through their careers, civic engagement or philanthropic efforts. Prior to entering academia, VanLaecken built a career in both public and private accounting, serving clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to locally owned small businesses. He also serves on nonprofit boards and committees in the community.</p> <p>The 91制片厂 Innovation and Startup Center received the Cultivator of Progress Award, which recognizes a business or organization that actively drives positive change and innovation within the agribusiness, manufacturing or technology sectors. The center works with innovators, nonprofits and rural communities to launch tech startups and create digital jobs in northeastern South Dakota, embracing a fail-forward mentality and building pathways to help aspiring entrepreneurs turn their concepts into companies.</p> <p>Four NSU faculty and staff members were among the 2026 Leadership Aberdeen graduates: Audrey Miller, Dr. Lyncee Monson, Nicole Schutter and Shelby Serrano. All coursework for both degrees is available fully online, allowing students to remain at their home institution while progressing toward credentials from both universities. &nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br><strong>Accelerated Master's Program (4+1 Model)&nbsp;</strong><br><br>NSU students in the B.A. Criminology and Criminal Justice program will have a streamlined path to earn a Master of Science in Cyber Defense with a Security Management and Compliance Specialization from DSU 鈥 completing both degrees in approximately five years.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Students who meet eligibility requirements 鈥 including a minimum 3.0 GPA 鈥 are guaranteed admission to DSU's graduate program. Up to 12 graduate-level credits taken at DSU during a student's senior year at NSU count toward both degrees, reducing total time to completion. Seven NSU students competed with 13 total entries, earning multiple individual and team awards across the field.</p> <p>Abiah George earned excellence awards 鈥 recognizing the top 20% of competitors 鈥 in extemporaneous speaking and student scholarship, and a superior award 鈥 top 10% 鈥 in interviewing. She also finished 10th among Open IPDA debate speakers and earned an excellence award in IPDA.</p> <p>Haylee Bohnet earned an excellence award in Dramatic Interpretation.</p> <p>Hannah Smith and Liv Ashley finished as national runners-up in Junior Varsity Public Forum debate. Smith was also named the top JV Public Forum debate speaker, while Ashley finished eighth among Open Public Forum debate speakers.</p> <p>Elana Bishop and Lauren Carpenter finished as national runners-up in Novice Public Forum debate.</p> <p>Jericho Jones reached the quarterfinals in Novice IPDA debate.</p> <p>Bohnet and George were also selected to perform in the PKD Showcase, an invitation reserved for some of the tournament's top performances 鈥 Bohnet in Dramatic Interpretation and George in Extemporaneous Speaking.</p> <p>"What makes me most proud of this team is their commitment to each other and their desire to drive each other to greater success," said Dr. Justin Foote, assistant professor of communication studies and director of forensics at 91制片厂 State University.</p> <p>The team made the trip under the leadership of Dr. Kelsie Roberts, assistant professor of sport marketing and administration, who stepped in when Dr. Foote was unable to attend.</p> <p>"Dr. Kelsie Roberts truly embodied what makes 91制片厂 State University a special community," Foote said. "When I couldn't attend, she accepted the challenge of jumping into an event she had no experience in and joining a group of students she did not know well. A member of the NSU women's soccer team, she has also earned the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship and the Wolf PACT Scholarship during her time at 91制片厂.</p> <p>The scholarship was created by Bruce Anderson of Britton, S.D., as a way to honor his late wife, Carol, who died in 2022. Anderson wanted to memorialize her in a meaningful way, and a nursing scholarship felt like the right fit. The award goes to South Dakota residents enrolled in an accredited pre-licensure registered nurse program. Preference is given first to residents of Britton, then to residents of Brown, Day, Edmunds, Faulk, Marshall, McPherson, Roberts or Spink county. Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation from non-family members highlighting their leadership, compassion, community involvement and personal character.</p> <p>"NSU has definitely pushed me to grow, but I've also felt supported the whole way 鈥 both in the classroom and on the field," said Poppen.</p> <p>Poppen has her sights set on becoming a certified registered nurse anesthetist, driven by a desire to make a real difference in patient care. Outside the classroom, she stays busy as a member of the soccer team and teaches ice skating lessons in the winter 鈥 a schedule that has sharpened her time management skills as much as her nursing studies.</p> <p>"Kailyn exemplifies exactly the kind of student our new BSN program was built for 鈥 driven, compassionate and deeply connected to this region," said Dr. Lyncee Monson, associate dean of nursing at 91制片厂 State University. The 33-credit program aligns with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and emphasizes competency in content knowledge, diverse instructional approaches, use of data and assessments, professional development, and leadership.</p> <p>The Huron cohort is sponsored through a partnership with the Huron Community Foundation, helping expand access to graduate-level professional learning for educators in the region.</p> <p>Christian D.
