ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dr. Shelby Boettner, DNP, RN, assistant professor of nursing at 91��Ƭ�� State University, recently co-authored a study in the Journal of Hospice & Palliative Nursing focused on how faculty experience shapes nursing student preparedness in primary palliative care.

The multi-university study, which included four Midwestern institutions, examined how nursing faculty teach palliative care and how prepared they feel to guide students in this area. The findings point to progress in palliative care education, while also identifying ongoing challenges, including limited faculty preparation and continued confusion between palliative care and hospice.

The research emphasizes the importance of faculty development and stronger curriculum integration to help nursing programs better prepare students for practice, especially in rural communities where specialty palliative care services may be less accessible.

“Preparing nurses to deliver primary palliative care begins with preparing the faculty who teach them. Primary palliative care focuses on improving quality of life for patients and families throughout serious illness, and this study underscores how important it is to connect classroom learning with the real-world experience of caring for these patients.”

The study was initiated during Dr. Boettner’s time at Presentation College and brought to publication while she was serving as faculty at 91��Ƭ�� State University.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dr. Eman Momeni, assistant professor of accounting at 91��Ƭ�� State University, has coauthored a research article titled “A study of modular contents and related teaching techniques in fraud & forensic accounting education from North American academicians’ perspective,” published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Accounting Education.

“I am pleased to share that my latest research paper has been accepted and published online in the Journal of Accounting Education,” Momeni said. “This publication is the outcome of a project I initiated over two years ago, and I am pleased to see this work reach completion.”

The Journal of Accounting Education is indexed in Scopus and is recognized as a respected scholarly outlet in both education and accounting. The coauthored article is currently available online for a limited time through a free access link provided by the publisher and is scheduled to appear in the journal’s June 2026 volume.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Kristen Brown, assistant professor of English at 91��Ƭ�� State University, recently presented her research on the fiery poetics of Muscogee author Joy Harjo at the Western American Literature Conference in Oklahoma City.

Brown serves on the Executive Council for the international organization, which celebrated its fiftieth year. She also chairs their WLA and Charles Redd K-12 Teaching Award, which recognizes exceptional K-12 teaching plans related to the North American West. During the conference, she joined the Sustainability Committee, which works to offset the environmental impacts of conferences by raising funds for local environmental communities.

Brown’s most recent academic publication, a chapter in Race in the Multiethnic Literature Classroom—in which she explores pedagogical approaches to the works of Wahpeton writer-activist Charles Eastman/Ohiyesa—was recently awarded the South Atlantic Modern Language Association (SAMLA) Award for an edited collection.

Brown’s interdisciplinary teaching and research focus on amplifying Indigenous voices and encouraging collaborative environmental stewardship. She is currently co-editing a collection on land management in North American literature and culture for Routledge’s Environmental Humanities Series.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dr. Lucas Wiscons, assistant professor of criminology and criminal justice at 91��Ƭ�� State University, recently presented at the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) South Dakota Conference, held Oct. 16–17 in Huron, S.D.

His presentation, “Justice or Trauma? How Systems of Punishment Create Wounds in People and Communities,” drew from his forthcoming book project and examines how America’s criminal justice system has become the default responder to mental health crises—often with counterproductive results.

In his presentation, Wiscons outlined how funneling people in crisis into jails and prisons can exacerbate illness, destabilize families, and burden public safety agencies. He also highlighted the unmet mental health needs of police and correctional officers who increasingly find themselves on the front lines of behavioral health emergencies.

“Professionals in law enforcement and corrections sign up to fight crime and keep communities safe,” said Wiscons. “Yet day after day, they’re dispatched to manage mental health and substance use crises without the training or resources those situations demand. Everyone may have the best of intentions, but the outcomes are often discouraging. You can’t incarcerate someone out of a persistent mental health condition.”

Wiscons called on South Dakota leaders to treat the state’s new prison construction as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to rethink the continuum of care. He urged investments in evidence-based diversion programs, crisis stabilization, co-responder models, and post-release services—approaches that can reduce recidivism, improve officer wellness, and deliver better outcomes for people in crisis.

“Our state can be a national leader in responding productively to mental health and addiction crises,” he said. “If we align correctional infrastructure with robust treatment and community supports, we can reduce harm, strengthen public safety, and steward taxpayer dollars more effectively.”

A specialist in the intersection of the U.S. justice and mental health systems, Wiscons has published research on interactions between police and civilians on the autism spectrum. He is also an author on the forthcoming edition of The Criminalization of Mental Illness: Crisis and Opportunity for the Justice System.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – 91��Ƭ�� State University Adjunct Professor Steven Trigili has published an article in the Journal of Financial Compliance (Volume 8, Number 4).

The article, “The challenges of wearing multiple hats: A compliance officer’s guide to successfully leading a small firm,”explores the unique responsibilities of compliance officers in small firms. It highlights how these professionals must navigate the same complex regulatory requirements as large institutions while managing limited resources.

Trigili’s work emphasizes that compliance officers in small firms often serve as adaptive leaders, extending beyond rule enforcement to guide organizations through uncertainty. The article discusses how effective compliance leadership involves prioritizing under pressure, influencing without formal authority, and fostering a culture of accountability.

These lessons align directly with Trigili's courses at 91��Ƭ�� State University. By examining how compliance officers develop decision-making, resource management, and leadership skills, the article demonstrates the broader applications of these competencies in preparing future business leaders.

“I’m thrilled to have this article published because it showcases the challenges and opportunities I see every day as a compliance officer and business leader,” Trigili said. “The best part is being able to bring those real-world experiences into the classroom. ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dr. Monte Meyerink, assistant professor of mathematics education and director of the NSU Math Clinic at 91��Ƭ�� State University, has co-authored a peer-reviewed research article examining how future teachers plan to integrate technology into K-8 mathematics instruction.

The article, titled "K-8 Pre-Service Teachers' Technology Integration in Mathematics: Perspectives and Anticipated Practices," was published in the June 2025 issue of the Journal of Research in Science, Mathematics and Technology Education, a free, open-access journal published by Eastern Mennonite University.

Meyerink's research explored pre-service teachers' knowledge of technology integration, their questions and concerns about implementing technology in the classroom, and their anticipated practices for using technology to teach mathematics. The study also compared two prominent technology integration frameworks — the SAMR and PICRAT (Passive, Interactive and Creative for student engagement, as well as Replacement, Amplification, Transformation for the impact on teaching practices) models — to evaluate their effectiveness as planning tools for educators. The SAMR model outlines four levels of technology integration: Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition. The PICRAT model helps educators think critically about how they integrate technology into their classroom: Passive, Interactive and Creative related to students’ relationship to technology, and Replacement, Amplification and Transformation related to the impact on teacher practice.

Key findings from the research revealed that pre-service teachers reported limited knowledge of technology integration and had questions about when and how to effectively incorporate technology into their teaching. Despite these concerns, participants indicated they anticipate using technology frequently in their future classrooms. The study found that pre-service teachers tend to design technology-enhanced mathematics activities that foster interactive learning and amplify instruction. Additionally, the research highlighted the PICRAT model as a particularly useful framework for planning technology integration in K-8 mathematics contexts.

"This research contributes to a deeper understanding of pre-service teachers' readiness to use technology to teach K-8 mathematics concepts before they enter the teaching profession," Meyerink said. "These findings, paired with the comparison of the SAMR and PICRAT models, are especially useful to teacher educators for programming and research purposes."

Meyerink joined 91��Ƭ��'s faculty in 2022 and has experience teaching mathematics to students in grades 5-16. At 91��Ƭ��, he primarily teaches undergraduate-level mathematics and mathematics education courses, as well as a graduate-level research methodology course. His research interests focus on the preparation of mathematics teachers.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dr. Eman Momeni, assistant professor of accounting at 91��Ƭ�� State University, was recently invited to present at the 2025 Fraud and Forensic Accounting Conference, hosted by the Louisiana State University Department of Accounting.

Momeni presented his research, “Corporate Reporting Fraud and Descriptive Decision Theories,” which explores the behavioral, psychological, and cultural factors behind fraudulent financial reporting. His invitation came as recognition of his scholarly publication and his service as an Editorial Advisory Board member for the Journal of Forensic and Investigative Accounting.

The conference brought together experts from across the country, including representatives from the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), and attracted certified public accountants, fraud examiners, internal auditors, attorneys, and educators.

“Corporate financial reporting fraud remains a serious threat to the integrity of our financial systems,” Momeni said. “My research shows that effective prevention requires more than traditional audits. It demands integrating behavioral insights into audit practice, ethics training, governance, and leadership modeling.”

Momeni said his key takeaway was the importance of bridging academic research with real-world application. “Participants valued the practical insights that rigorous scholarship can bring to combating fraud,” he added.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dr. Eman Momeni, assistant professor of accounting at 91��Ƭ�� State University, recently had his work published in the Afro-Asian Journal of Finance & Accounting.

His article, “The impact of an emerging market’s microstructure legislations on market efficiency: evidence from Iran,” looks at how new trading rules on the Tehran Stock Exchange influenced both pricing efficiency and investor behavior. The research focused on four key areas — tick size, lot size, minimum order value, and base volume — and compared market data before and after those rules went into effect.

Momeni found that updating market microstructures can strengthen the pricing process and lead to more efficient markets. These results, he said, are especially valuable for policymakers and investors working in emerging economies.

“This publication contributes to a deeper understanding of how legislation shapes financial systems and complements my broader research on corporate governance and financial transparency,” Momeni said. “This perspective helps students grasp both the challenges of international markets and the influence that regulations have on how investors act.”

ABERDEEN, S.D. – A new article by Dr. Keun Lee, professor of economics at 91��Ƭ�� State University, has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Finance and Banking Studies.

The article, titled Three Interest Rate Theories, will appear in an upcoming volume of the peer-reviewed journal.

In the paper, Dr. Lee explores both the general and academic views of interest rates—one as the cost of borrowing and reward for savings, and the other as a monetary phenomenon determined by the balance between money demand and supply. While these perspectives might seem fundamentally different, the article argues they are more aligned than traditionally believed.

“The history of the interest rate dates back to the Hammurabi Code, written around BC 1800, which set it at 33 1/3% for grain loans and 20% for silver loans. In the modern economy, authorities do not set the interest rate, but market forces dictate it. Aside from its long history and its setting, there have also been a variety of views on its true nature, which I find intriguing. The paper considers three relatively recent views on the interest rate and examines how they differ and why,” said Dr. Lee.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – A 91��Ƭ�� State University research team has had a study accepted for publication exploring how animals can help students adjust to the challenges of college life.

The study, titled “Adapting to Change: A Mixed Methods Approach to Understand How Colleges and Universities are Utilizing Animals to Help Students Transition into Higher Education,” was co-authored by Dr. Christopher Puglisi (former NSU faculty member), NSU faculty members Dr. Shalini Mathew, Dr. Nicole D. Schutter and Dr. Monte Meyerink, and NSU student Abiah George. Their work will appear in People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice.

Over the course of 18 months, the team gathered and analyzed data from multiple college and university campuses. Their findings concluded that incorporating Animal-Assisted Services (AAS) into postsecondary transition programs helps colleges and universities foster supportive environments, reduce test anxiety, and enhance the overall learning experience. Interacting with animals offers therapeutic benefits, helping students better manage stress and anxiety during the often-difficult transition to college life.

“Having virtual meetings with schools that embrace animal-assisted intervention was eye opening,” said George. “It was really interesting to see the important role they play in student wellness on campuses.”

Dr. Mathew emphasized the collaborative nature of the project. “Our project was a wonderful journey of teamwork and learning together,” she said. “Working side by side with colleagues from different fields and an undergraduate student, we shared ideas, learned from each other, and supported one another throughout every step. It was inspiring to see how our unique perspectives and experiences came together to create something meaningful. The process was full of lively conversations, new ideas, and plenty of laughter. We’re proud of what we accomplished as a team and especially grateful for the mentorship and friendship that grew along the way.”

Dr. Schutter noted the power of interdisciplinary research. “This study reflects the power of collaboration across disciplines and the incredible potential we unlock when we engage in such projects,” she said. “By exploring animal-assisted interventions and supports, we are not only advancing research in our specific disciplines, but also finding innovative ways to support the well-being and success of our students.”

The team hopes their research will encourage others in higher education to explore animal-assisted approaches that improve student outcomes and promote collaboration across fields.
