Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen
  • Must be admitted to NSU in a qualified degree or certificate program
  • Must maintain satisfactory academic progress, as defined by NSU
  • May not be in default on a federal student loan
  • Must not owe an overpayment of a federal loan or grant

 

Complete the FAFSA

  • The (FAFSA) may be filed beginning Oct. 1 each year. Watch  for an overview of the process.
  • Applications submitted before March 1 are given priority consideration for federal supplemental grants and federal work-study. List the NSU school code of 003466 on your FAFSA.
  • The FAFSA will determine your dependency status. If you're classified as dependent, you'll need to provide information from your parents.

FAFSA Follow-up

  • If your application requires you to provide follow-up documentation such as verification forms, you'll be notified by the Enrollment Service Center (ESC) via email. You'll be directed to to access the forms online that you'll need to print and submit to ESC.
  • You will receive a FAFSA Submission Summary, which is a summary of the information you submitted on the FAFSA. Check it for accuracy and make any necessary corrections to your FAFSA.
  • The information reported in the FAFSA is used in a formula to calculate the Student Aid Index (SAI), which is listed on your FAFSA Submission Summary. The SAI is a measure of the family's ability to pay for college expenses for a year; it is not necessarily what a family will pay out of pocket for school.
  • To determine financial need, the SAI is subtracted from the cost of attendance (tuition, fees, books, supplies, housing, food, personal and transportation expenses).

  • NSU may mail you a financial aid offer detailing the amount and type of federal financial aid for which you've qualified; see the 2025-26 Aid Offer Guide. Review the materials, then log in to Self Service Banner to accept or reject the aid.
  • Students experiencing a delay in their federal financial aid funding may be eligible for a short-term loan for books and supplies. Contact the NSU Financial Aid Office for details.
